Relationships
At Jubilee Park Primary School we use a restorative approach that acknowledges the feelings, needs and rights of all parties in any conflict or potential/actual disagreement. With this restorative approach, we would define misbehaviour as harm done to the wellbeing of another, and in dealing with an incident we would want to find out how all sides are feeling and what they need to put things right. Where possible we believe in dialogue so everyone involved has an opportunity to communicate and cooperate with each other.
Children need to be able to trust that when agreements are broken there are processes in place to repair harm, ensure that those harmed feel safe and able to learn and support those who have broken agreements to ensure that there are no ongoing difficulties.
We believe behaviour is directly linked to relationships and inappropriate behaviour is defined in terms of the harm or potential harm that it causes others. Children are therefore encouraged to take responsibility to engage in thinking about their behaviour as a member of the school community, becoming active participants in establishing class agreements. From this, expectations are agreements, which are introduced as a formal protection of one’s rights.
School Expectations
The staff and children at Jubilee Park agreed the following school expectations and they are called our Jubilee Stars:
Celebrate Success
The emphasis is always to encourage positive behaviour rather than to criticise inappropriate behaviour and celebrating success has a major role to play in this.
The most immediate method is verbal praise; it is motivational and helps children to realise that good behaviour is valued.
Every class in Jubilee Park each has a jar in which they can collect ‘Jubilee Stars’. Every class teacher has a collection of ‘Jubilee Stars’ which can be given out at any time as a reward for behaviour, work, etc.
Each Friday, a Celebration Assembly is held where the jars may be shown to show how well the classes are doing and class/whole school rewards will be given once the jars are full. Also during this time certificates are given out by the class teacher for learning and behaviour as well as lunchtime awards.
